PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT

 

There has been a suspected case of a rabid raccoon in the area of Iron Mine Hill Road and Sayles Hill Road in North Smithfield, RI. To safeguard our community, residents must stay informed about cases like these due to the seriousness of rabies infection. Rabies can infect all mammals including people and their pets.

 

Anyone who sees an animal acting unusually is urged to call Animal Control officials. Please follow the guidance below:

 

·Do not approach animals that you do not know. Exercise caution and maintain a safe distance.

 

·  If you have been bitten or scratched by an animal of unknown vaccination history, wash the wound immediately and seek medical attention.

 

· Ensure that your pets have a current rabies vaccination. If your pet is allowed outside, a booster vaccine is strongly recommended. Keep outdoor pets indoors until they receive the booster vaccines.

 

· Do not feed stray or unknown animals including cats and dogs. Avoid any interaction that may result in potential exposure.

 

·  Do not leave trash or food outside unless it is in a trash can with a tight-fitting lid. Prevent attracting wild animals to your property.

 

· If a pet is fed outside, do not leave food out overnight. Minimize the chances of attracting animals that may carry rabies.

 

· If a pet comes in contact with an animal that might be rabid, contact a veterinarian immediately. Seek professional guidance to ensure the well-being of your pet.

Stocks have recovered a bit on Wall Street after opening sharply lower. It comes as investors seek more clarity on the latest tariffs implemented by President Trump this week. Yesterday, the White House announced a one month delay for tariffs on automakers, which led some traders to believe more exemptions are on the way.        President Trump is reportedly working to shut down the Department of Education. A draft executive order, seen by the Wall Street Journal, will direct Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take all steps permitted by law to facilitate the department's closure. Trump is reportedly planning to sign the order as soon as today        President Trump is warning Hamas that it must release hostages held in Gaza. It comes as the White House confirmed the U.S. has been holding direct talks with Hamas. In a post, Trump addressed the people of Gaza, saying "a beautiful future awaits," but if you hold hostages, "you are dead."        The House is expected to hold a vote soon on whether to censure the Texas Democrat who disrupted President Trump's joint address to Congress. During the speech Tuesday night, Congressman Al Green stood in the aisle of the House chamber and waved his cane at the president. Wednesday, the House voted along party lines to defeat a motion by the Democrats to table the censure resolution.        People who have surgery on a Friday face a greater risk of death and complications, a new study reveals. A team at Houston Methodist Hospital looked at 25 common procedures and found that the risks went up compared to people who were treated earlier in the week. It's called the "weekend effect," and could reflect that hospitals tend to operate with fewer people on Saturdays and Sundays.        The musical "Hamilton" will not be coming to the Kennedy Center next year. Producer Jeffrey Seller said in a statement that the injection of politics into the management of the venue made it impossible for the show to go on. President Trump named himself chairman of the Kennedy Center last month and appointed a new board to run the venue.
