Woonsocket Education Department Signs on to the Rhode Island Department of Education’s LEAP District Support Program to Accelerate Learning

Over the next two years, the Woonsocket Education Department will receive up to $4 million in funds and

additional specialized supports from RIDE to meet priorities and needs in our district

 

Woonsocket, RI - December 2, 2021 - The Woonsocket Education Department has accepted the invitation

by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) to participate in the recently announced statewide

Learning, Equity and Accelerated Pathways (LEAP) District Support Program. The program is designed to

support districts in accelerating student learning as a response to the education disruption of the

COVID-19 pandemic. RIDE will provide the Woonsocket Education Department with up to $4 million

dollars in matching funds to support this work. Districts were selected through a composite index

composed of the following categories associated with pandemic impact: COVID-19 health

metrics; academic performance; population of students from historically underserved student

groups; and school climate and student wellbeing. “This is a great opportunity for our district to better

support the academic and social-emotional needs of all of our students with the ultimate goal of

improving student achievement,” said Dr. Patrick McGee.

The LEAP District Support Program represents a two-year investment that fosters a valuable partnership

between RIDE and the district. The program will enable the district to prioritize our specific needs and

continue to build complimentary supports for our school community. In addition to the matching funds,

the district will receive a designated LEAP District Support Fellow to support our work, workshops and

professional development through the Center for Education Policy Research (CEPR) at Harvard

University’s Proving Ground program, support with data analysis and disaggregation,

and specific supports tailored to our districts’ unique needs.

Throughout this process, we will solicit the feedback and input of all our community stakeholders for an

inclusive and successful process. This collaborative work aims to improve student outcomes for all of our

students and will enhance the efforts currently underway or in preparation in our district to accelerate

learning in the wake of the pandemic.

Former President Trump is in a New York City courtroom for day two of jury selection in his hush money criminal trial. When entering the court, Trump said experts are calling the trial a disgrace and it should have been thrown out a long time ago. The former President is accused of falsifying business records in order to cover up payments made to an adult film star just prior to the 2016 election.        The Supreme Court is hearing arguments in a case that could invalidate felony obstruction charges for defendants connected to the U.S. Capitol riot. The justices are hearing an appeal brought by defendant Joseph Fischer, a former police officer, who is seeking to dismiss a charge accusing him of obstructing the certification of President Biden's election victory. The court will weigh whether a charge of seeking to obstruct an official proceeding applies to the attack on the Capitol.        The Senate could soon take up the matter of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The House is expected to send articles of impeachment against Mayorkas to the Senate today. Republicans in the House impeached Mayorkas in February over his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is expected to move to quickly dismiss the charges.        The Midwest is bracing for severe thunderstorms. An area from Rochester, Minnesota, to Little Rock, Arkansas, is expected to be affected by the powerful storms. Hail, damaging wind gusts and even a few tornadoes are possible in some areas.        Authorities are confirming the deaths of two Kansas women whose bodies were found in Oklahoma. The bodies of Veronica Butler and Jillian Kelley were found in Texas County, Oklahoma, this past weekend, more than two weeks after the women were last seen. Four suspects are facing first-degree murder charges.        Record labels have come to an agreement with the Screen Actors Guild on protections for artists from the use of AI. SAG-AFTRA announced Friday that the agreement with major labels follows protections the union and the Writers Guild of America reached with production studios last year after their respective strikes. They included landmark protections around using artificial intelligence as the evolving technology poses increasing threats to the creative workforce.
