Sen. Cano is part of virtual CNBC/Telemundo town hall with U.S. Secretary of Education
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket) is participating in a virtual town hall to be aired tomorrow, October 13 at 1 p.m. regarding financial literacy. The event is being held in conjunction with Telemundo as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, and can be viewed on CNBC.com.
“It was a true honor to be invited to this important event that stresses the crucial need and benefits of sound financial literacy education and training. As we saw the economic impacts of the pandemic ravage our residents, particularly those of color, the need for financial literacy has never been greater, especially for the quickly growing Hispanic population of our state. I thank everyone involved and I am looking forward to continue the work of increasing financial literacy for all Rhode Islanders,” said Senator Cano.
The town hall features Dr. Miguel Cardona, the U.S. Secretary of Education, who is joining CNBC Senior Personal Finance Correspondent Sharon Epperson for a conversation with America addressing the current state of financial education, its impact on growth opportunities for the Latinx community, and how it can lead to economic equality and equity.
Senator Cano is part of a panel of thought leaders and financial education advocates discussing the long-term benefits of financial empowerment and the necessary strategies to implement change and expand financial inclusion through quality financial education in America’s schools.
A Colombian refugee herself, Sen. Cano championed legislation enacted earlier this year making demonstration of financial literacy a graduation requirement. Sen. Cano is also Vice President of Community Development at Navigant Credit Union; she has worked with members of communities who need better financial literacy preparation, and led community workshops, in English and in Spanish, on topics such as understanding budgets, banking basics, planning for education, and parent’s financial literacy.
Individuals from across the country are participating to ask the panel questions, including several Rhode Islanders: Pat Page, the 2014 Rhode Island Teacher of the Year; Alfonso Cumplido, a CFA and the Director of Investment Strategy at Independence Financial Partners; and Dory Aine, a student at the Providence College School of Business.
The Republican-led House is advancing legislation to provide military aid for Israel, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific. The House is expected to vote on four separate bills over the weekend after passing a critical threshold in the rules committee Thursday with the help of Democrats. The move has inflamed conservatives who are against additional aid to Ukraine and have threatened Speaker Mike Johnson's job over the issue.
